The annual Ski to Sea Race on May 25th
Ski to SeaThe orginial Mount Baker Marathon ended in 1913 after a racer Victor Galbraith fell into a crevasse. He was found six hours later, nearly dead. In 2005, the Ski to Sea Race was featured nationally on the "Fox Sports Northwest" network, reaching 3.2 million households. Ski to Sea siteWhat orginally began as more of a cannon ball run from Bellingham to the Mount Baker summit and back in 1911 took a 60 year break before being reinvented as the Ski to Sea Race While safer today it is an impressive marathon - relay race today. It includes alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, running, road biking and canoeing. Prior to 1990 the canoe portion would end at its delta and a sailor would complete the race to Marine Park using a Hobie Cat (Sail Boat) to cross Bellingham Bay. Because of unpredictable winds and timing the canoe portion now ends at Hovander Park in Ferndale where a mountain biker takes the timing chip (High tech baton) to Squalicum Harbor where a Kayaker completed the last leg. Mount Baker Highway will be closed from just south of the ski area (milepost 54) to Canyon Creek Road (milepost 35.4), just east of Glacier. Kendall Road will be open between South Pass Road and the intersection with Mount Baker Highway, but drivers may face delays as police direct traffic in the area. Racers may still be on the roadway after it opens, so stay alert if you plan to be in the area. |
